Veteran's Day

November 2018 – Green Zone Housing – Creating Containers of Hope

Green Zone Housing Exhibit Home on display to share their vision.

Here at CGI Container Sales we love seeing new, creative uses for shipping containers. Have a quick look at our CGI Project Gallery, and you will see what we mean. When someone finds a creative way to use containers AND is putting them toward a great cause, that’s something we can really get behind. Green Zone Housing is finding ways to turn steel boxes into containers of hope.

Hot on the heels of Veteran’s Day and just before Thanksgiving, CGI Container Sales is thankful for the opportunity to partner with an organization that is going the extra mile for veterans in need. Green Zone Housing is turning shipping containers into homes for veterans, and their mission reaches far beyond simply putting roofs over heads. Green Zone Housing aims to truly invest in the lives of veterans whether they need housing, job training, or a supportive community.

There are currently over 55,000 homeless veterans in our country and over 1 million more at risk of becoming homeless. That is too many. There are several organizations working to assist these veterans in getting back on their feet in a world that can be difficult to readjust to after the intensity of combat. Green Zone Housing is making it possible for homeless veterans to have an address of their own while creating a powerful sense of ownership through their unique building program. Each veteran recipient becomes the project manager of their own build and earns their new home through “sweat equity” by helping with the labor to convert the container. “We don’t give handouts, we give hand ups,” says co-founder Mark Cook. This goal of empowerment sets Green Zone Housing apart as they aim to build supportive communities for veterans to connect, grow, and heal together.

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to stand behind this organization. GCI Container Sales has donated ten 40-foot high cube shipping containers to Green Zone Housing for future home builds. Two of these containers have already been assigned to their “WWII Build” for World War II veteran Don Henry and his grandson. These two deserving vets will receive the housing they need thanks to Green Zone Housing and Zach Griffin who is grandson and brother to the two recipients. CGI Container Sales is happy to be part of this equation of hope. “CGI has cut the build cost of this project by $4,400,” says Cook. “This amount is huge, considering that these monies are funds that GZH does not have to raise… CGI is being a ‘key’ to a veterans future!”

Green Zone Housing is actively serving Montgomery County and Harris County in Texas. They have recently received a multiple-acre property donation in Alabama, and their ultimate vision is to serve veterans across the nation. From all of us here at CGI Container Sales we would like to extend our sincere respect and gratitude to all who are serving or have served in the United States Military. If you or a family member have served our country, thank you for your sacrifice and commitment. On this eve of Thanksgiving, we remember your service and we are thankful for the freedoms you protect. From CGI and Green Zone Housing:

“God bless you, God bless our troops here and abroad fighting for our freedoms, and God bless America. We’ll see ya!” – Mark Cook
