Sunset Magazine’s Small Space Living Project Description
When the Patrikios sought to build a guesthouse in the backyard of their home in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, an Sunset Magazine article about small-space living a year earlier sprung to mind. That article would become the inspiration for the couple’s new guest quarters.
The Patrikios contacted HyBrid Architecture and purchased the “c192 Nomad” model, which was built offsite and delivered to their backyard for installation. The new guest residence is painted a bright yellow — an homage to the original color of the container when it was used for shipping.
Concrete footings were poured to provide a sound and stable foundation for the new guest residence. ConGlobal provided container modifications to provide space for three floor-to-ceiling glass doors and removed part of the container to be re-used as a large barn-door style slide to cover the interior glass sliding doors. The guest house is equipped with a kitchen (complete with a two-burner stove, sink, and small refrigerator) and a bathroom with a shower, and features a combined living/sleeping space. The sleeping arrangement makes clever use of the space with a couch that converts to a queen bed and a twin-sized upper bunk that folds down from the wall.
Container homes are fully permitted in the state of Washington. This gust house, inspired by a Sunset Magazine article, now stands as a ray of sunlight for the Patrikios’ houseguests.

Containers & Modifications
The guest house was built using one bright yellow container. The side was cut-away to allow for sliding doors. The part of the container that was removed was re-used as a large barn-door style slide to cover the interior glass sliding doors. Concrete footings were poured to provide a sound and stable foundation for the new guest residence.
Details & Summary
The new guest quarters retain the original look of an in-use shipping container. The swing-doors are still in-tact; when opened, the beauty of the modified container is revealed. The guests are greeted by a hidden front door which enters into the study bungalow. The side of the former cargo container slides, highlighting the three floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Container homes such as this one are fully-permitted homes in the State of Washington. This bright yellow guest house has a kitchen (complete with a 2-burner stove, sink, and small refrigerator), bathroom with a shower, and combined living/sleeping. The sleeping is a clever use of a couch which converts to a queen bed, and a twin bed (as an upper bunk) which folds down from the wall.
