Useful Shipping Container Information

If you’ve ever shopped for a shipping container, navigating all the details and specifications can seem overwhelming. The go-to experts at ConGlobal are here to help. Selecting the right container comes down to five key elements: size, specification, type, condition, and budget.

How to pick the right size of shipping container.

The size of the container can dictate other aspects of your purchase, such as condition (new vs. used) and cost. So, it’s a great place to start when determining how to pick the right container.

The most popular shipping container sizes are 20’ and 40’. While other sizes are available, such as 10’ and 30’, they are less common and can be more challenging to source.

How to pick the right condition for your shipping container

Once you’ve settled on a size, let’s jump into determining if you need a new container or if you can upcycle a used one.

One-trip (new) shipping containers

New shipping containers are known as one-trip, as they have only been used once to ship a single load of dry cargo on the journey to the U.S. They are the newest and nicest containers you can buy.

One-trip containers are ideal if:

  • Your container is in a highly visible area
  • Your container will be used as a dwelling
  • Your container will be associated with a business

Cargo-worthy (used) shipping containers

Cargo-worthy (CW) containers are boxes that have been at sea for 12-18 years. A cargo-worthy container lives up to all the requirements for international shipping and exports, but it has signs of wear including dents, scratches, and patches of surface rust.

Wind & Watertight (used) shipping containers

Wind and watertight (WWT) containers are among the most budget-friendly shipping containers you can purchase. Like cargo-worthy containers, wind and watertight units are between 12 and 18 years old, but they are now retired from shipping because they no longer meet structural requirements (carrying the cargo weight and being stacked and transported on container ships).

Even though these units have significant signs of wear, their floors should be intact, doors should seal properly, and the WWT container should not have holes or leaks.

Who uses shipping containers and what are they good for?

  • Manufacturing — storing raw and finished products
  • Construction — material storage during a building project
  • Military — training facilities and on-site storage
  • Institutions — equipment storage and renovations
  • Consumers for extra storage when remodeling
  • Communities — Sustainable housing and equipment storage for a sports event or county fair
I have bought several containers over the past few years from ConGlobal’s Memphis crew, and they are always prompt with service and deliver quality containers for my projects. The cost of the units is reasonable, and you don’t have to do a lot of shopping. They’ll take care of you.
